The final syllabus will be available in the Learning Management System.
This is a past syllabus providing a general idea of what the course entails. This does not represent the current course's syllabus, requirements or expectations.
Examination of basic textile components including fibers, yarns, and fabrics relative to performance standards and expectations for intended uses.
Upon completing the course, students should be able to:

This objective will be evaluated primarily by: |
---|---|---|---|
LG1 Scientific Literacy |
|
All topics in semester: The lecture covers the following textile components, their properties, and production methods: fibers, yarns, and fabrics. The lab activities provide hands-on experience for students to examine the different components and evaluate their properties. |
These goals are evaluated through pop quizzes, tests, discussion board, and the lab reports.
|
LG2 Critical and Creative Thinking |
|
All topics in semester: During lecture the instructor guides students to apply knowledge in solving real world problems and analyzing product properties based on given information. In the lab, students analyze “why” to get the results and “how” to apply the materials in products. |
These goals are evaluated via questions in tests. In the lab reports, there are discussion questions following testing results for each lab activity to evaluate students’ ability of reasoning and problem solving skills. |
LG3 Information Literacy |
|
Lab activities: Students need to be able to determine and locate standard test methods and specifications after showing them the various resources available in the lab. In addition, various popular media that are used to access textile information and the credibility of these sources are discussed. |
This goal is evaluated by the lab activity “Standard and specifications”. |
LG4 Quantitative Reasoning |
|
Lab activities: Some lab activities require students to calculate yarn size and fabric weight. Most of the lab activities require students to calculate mean and standard deviation of the test results. |
This goal is evaluated by the quality of the calculation questions in the lab reports. |
LG5 Communication –writing skills |
|
All topics in lecture: In lectures textile technical terms related to various textile components are introduced and utilized and the instructor corrects frequently misused terms. Lab activities: There are discussion questions in each lab activity for students to practice writing throughout the semester. |
This goal is evaluated via short answer/essay questions in tests. In the lab report, there are discussion questions following testing result for each lab activity to evaluate students’ writing skills. |
In this class, there are three major components:
Students take the tests through Canvas. The tests will be based on your learning from lectures, assigned readings, and lab activities. Related policies are listed below.
There are eight lab activities with required lab reports. Each lab report should follow the provided template in the lab manual. The reports should be typed in 12 fonts and thoroughly proofread. Students must work on their own material and turn in independent and original work.
